COHOES, NY - Residents were airing their concerns following the beating death of a man last Friday at the Ogden Mill Apartments.
The residents of the privately-owned senior citizens complex were very nervous Tuesday night. The complex is supposed to be a locked and secure building, so the question is how did someone get inside to murder one tenant and to beat up another, an elderly woman?
Seniors living at the apartments said they never had to be concerned about security until the vicious beating and death of 67-year-old John Siakala, but now they do.
The mayor and the police chief were at the scene Tuesday to try and allay their fears.
"A lot of them are upset, "said Chief Bill Heslin of the Cohoes Police Department. "They have a lot of questions for us and today what we want to do is come over here and address their concerns on security."
For instance, residents told NewsChannel 13 that the front door is very slow in closing to accommodate wheelchairs and inside some tenants even leave their doors unlocked, perhaps explaining how ex-con Mark Richardson was able to gain entry to allegedly assault Siakala.
"You need to lock you doors," said Mayor of Cohoes John McDonald. "There is just a lot of strange things happening out there and society has kind of lost its compass in many aspects."
The Siakala family is getting ready to bury the retired State Department of Transportation Wednesday morning. The wake was held Tuesday.
Richardson is being held in jail without bail and it is expected that a murder indictment will be brought against him sometime Wednesday.
