They're not trying to control, they're trying to kill competitors. They offer free turn by turn directions on their Nexus one, while Garmin and Tomtom charge. Yahoo charges for pop3, google has it free. hundreds of sites charge for online storage, google has it free(create a couple gmail accounts)
