In the late 70s and 80's a lot of birds, not just the Mapie, were poisioned by the use of insecticides. Nowadays, the insecticides are so efficient, that we are effectively starving the birds.

My parents always told me, as a kid, that the magpies are Nature's naughtiest thiefs, because the collect éverything that sparkles and glitters, and keep it in their nests... Is that true Phil ?

They are awesome birds and large too, and fun to watch as you so rightly say. In the 70's we posined wildlife with insecticides. These days, the insecticides are so much more effective, they dont harm the boirds so much, because they kill the insects, which the birds need to eat, and thus we are starving them.
