Since its inception six years ago, El Arranque has quickly earned an international reputation as the most important young tango orchestra in the world today. They recently played a series of concerts with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra at Lincoln Center, and at the tango festival in Paris in the National Theater of the Palais Chaillot. They are also an integral and vibrant part of the Buenos Aires tango scene, playing in both theatrical settings and in the most popular milongas (tango dances).
In their first year, El Arranque developed a repertoire that was quickly embraced by the tango community and widely used in dance performances. By the end of that year, El Arranque had performed over 200 shows. In 1998, they were invited to record their first CD by the company Vaiven. Sponsored by two legendary tango figures, Leopoldo Federico and Nelly Omar, the CD won wide play on major Buenos Aires radio stations. In June-July 1998, they toured with the CD "El Arranque" to Europe, participating the "Tangomania Summer Festival '98," which took place in Bologna, Italy. They also played Berlin, Stuttgart, and Dresden. In December, they were invited by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires to play for the closing night of the "Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires" with a large outdoor performance on Avenida Corrientes, closed off that night for thousands of people who came to dance. This event was a huge success for the orchestra and led the newspapers "Clarín" and "La Nación" to describe El Arranque as "the Tango revelation of the year."
Success in Buenos Aires led to a second, expanded tour of Europe in 1999, this time for two months in twelve cities including London, Paris, and Milan. In December, El Arranque was invited again to close the "Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires." In 2000, El Arranque performed in Buenos Aires, around Argentina and again in Europe (Rome, Lausanne, Padova). They also returned to the recording studio for their second CD, "Cabulero."
In January and February 2001, El Arranque toured Holland with the show, "Tango Tango de Buenos Aires." When they returned to Buenos Aires in March, they premiered "Cabulero," which includes as its last track a music video that can be played on computers. The CD has received both critical and popular acclaim. In May, they left for New York to play with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, directed by Wynton Marsalis. These concerts included original music written for both orchestras by both Wynton Marsalis and by Ramiro Gallo, El Arranque´s first violinist. El Arranque closed out 2001 with many concerts in Buenos Aires and two more tours of Europe (Spain, Portugal, and Germany).
From January to March of 2002, El Arranque played 50 concerts in 40 Japanese cities and 10 in Taiwán on the famous Min On Concert Association Tour, which has hosted all the legendary orchestras of tango for the past thirty years. They then played two concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in April, and returned to Buenos Aires to premiere their third CD, "Clásicos." This CD has sold almost 10,000 copies only in Argentina, becoming one of the Tango best sellers of 2002.
In addition to two more recordings scheduled for 2003, El Arranque is currently working on their first symphonic project.
