Victor Menotti, executive director for IFG, speaks in San Francisco to welcome the US Trade Representative. Negotiations within the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) framework were held in San Francisco from June 14 to June 18.

While the Obama Administration campaigned for a new approach to American trade policy, some analysts see worrying signs that US objectives will be based on previous proposals championed by Halliburton under the Bush-Cheney White House; those proposals called for global deregulation of energy services, specifically the cement-casing and testing services that failed in the blown-up Deepwater Horizon oil rig. BP's disaster highlights the need to shift from fossil fuels to conservation and clean energy; to achieve this, governments must maintain the right to regulate. According to IFG Executive Director, Victor Menotti, "democratic control over energy policies are a global imperative to address converging crises in security, economy, and ecology, so new trade policies are needed to ensure governments can protect our ecosystems and the livelihoods they sustain economically. In light of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, we call on US officials to take off the table any proposals to liberalize and deregulate energy, environmental, and other essential services in TPP."
