Just for the record... FAS is an extremely rare condition that ONLY occurs in some of the offsprings born to alcoholic women, not all. Research has proven that the health condition of the women who give birth to these children is generally dire and caused by the fact that the live in poverty.

In my dissertation on FAS, I have found so much contradictory research. The fact that it predominantly occurs in low socio-economic areas has concerned me. This chapter in Schardein’s book , I feel is an extremely useful insight and it goes some way to explaining why the effects of alcohol present themselves on a continuum and are not always present, when rationale tell us that they should.
