It was a temple style, not a family style. Therefore it was quite close to different kung fu styles.
And of course you are right. He was quite young, "only" 20years of intense training.
"The Chinese martial arts community"... My sifu will be shocked to heard THAT one. *g*
The Sun-Stile would probably screw up my Aikido-form. I would rather avoid that.
Up to now tho though the Chen style was quite compatible. We'll see. For now it is very salutary, in many ways.

In my not-so humble opinion, and I say not-so humble because I am really speaking out of line here owing to my lack of expertise, the Sun style should only be practiced by advanced martial artists, not novices. If I ever master the Yang style, 10 years from now, hopefully, I may take up the Sun. I know the form, however I do not know anything about pushing hands, or stance training methods.

Sun Lu Tang got the attention of the Chinese martial arts community, because he defeated several Tai Chi stylists, who themselves beat the likes of Shaolin, Hung Gar, and Wing Chun stylists. The genius of the Sun style, lies in how every step, every hand gesture, is in reality merely a variation of the Zhan Zhuang posture, hence, it potently both gathers, and circulates chi, like no other style does.
-
If you want the most powerful style, you should take up the Sun. Provided of course you have years of training already; the Sun style is not for novices.
"Big movements are not as refined as small movements, small movements, not as refined as stillness." This saying of the internal arts dictate, that the smaller the movements in Chi Kung or related arts, the more powerfully chi is circulated. Hence, the Sun style of Tai Chi is the most powerful.

A "brutal" Tai Chi style?
The Chinese martial arts community will be shocked to hear that one...
I will admit, it really is up to the person. I mean, a person can use the palm moves in Tai Chi to unbalance, or, to strike, problem is, even though Tai Chi Chuan can enhance physical strength if practiced for enough years, like Yang Lu Chan told his foul tempered son Yang Pang Hou, "beating someone with brute force is no longer Tai Chi."
-
It can be. One of our blackbelts is also a Taijiquan teacher.
I will also take up Chen-style soon.
-
Not really. The point is that at one point most martial arts simply become peaceful due to the skill of the master. Also they become simpler.
Aikido for instance leaves out the "cold bloodiness".
Taijiquan isn't always peaceful. The old styles can be rather brutal. (Internal organs damage rather easily)
It is sayd that you can begin Aikido at any age, but you "should" begin it at the age of about 15-17. Because that is the time young people confront themselves with topics aikido deals with.

Take up Tai Chi Chuan as a "backup" martial art! Be nice if the two could be combined. I'm sorry but, its not prudent to kick someone's brains in unless your life is in danger. I was in Hawaii once, vacationing there, and because Honolulu has a ridiculously huge east asian population, there are martial arts schools all over the place. Half of Hawaii's inmates were thrown in the slammer because of martial arts related "accidents" in bar brawls.

What about the generations of Karateka who have started and remained loyal to thier 'cold blooded' style?
Judo dude; Japanese police rely on it for their lives, and its only as cold blooded as its practitioner chooses to be, that's the beauty of it. And, its in fact much simpler than Aikido.

Other reasons tough-guy techniques can ruin your life:
1. Teacher attacked by student (minor under 18). Teacher loses job, sued and forced out of career. Happens every day.
2. Cop deals with street punk. Lots of blood involved. Hello Internal Affairs. Suspension. Investigation, etc.
If it's my life on the line, I'll happily kill somebody. But if all you know is how to beat somebody into the E/R in 3 easy steps...I hope you have a great lawyer. Not every judge is a fan of Chuck Norris. /sarc
