In this lecture, I show how Plato's Republic can be read as a reply to the challenges psychological and ethical egoism pose to traditional morality.

  • psychological egoism? feels a bit like an extention of operant conditioning - i act in a way that is reinforcing to my interest/values. interesting to explore, but ayn rand was a bit militant on the subject..

  • As much as I want to learn about ethical egoism you are as dry as unbuttered toast and there are no pretty pictures to hold my attention or illustrate your points.

  • I think that neither miguel nor mani are living the good life. Migul isn't following ethical egoism corectly for the same reason maddow wasn't an ethical egoist. the moment people learnt he truth Miguel is fucked. therefore he is not an ethical egoist.

  • I think physcological egoism doesn't make a difference between rational egoism(self-interested action that will be in my best interest int he long run) and irational egoism(doing stuff that is bad for me but i think is good,ie stealing) and thats where they made the mistake for me. Thats why I think ethical egoism is alot better and i like it. Rand ftw
