Nick Stiles took First Place in Boys 13-14 Featherweight at the Orlando Judo Open in March 2009. Nick is 12 but stepped up in age range in order to do submissions, which are only legal in Judo at ages 13+ for chokes (17+ for armbars). It was double elimination, and here in the finals Nick wins round 3 with throws (he is ahead on points at the end of the round). Nick is a Judo student of Sensei John Fiege at Judo Ryu Jax. He had only been taking Judo for 5 months at the time of this tournament (but he does have several years Brazilian Jiu Jitsu experience). Unfortunately the referees at this tournament had no idea what a triangle choke was (it IS legal in Judo) - Nick locked one with in his legs several times during his matches, and every time the ref calls for them to break & stand back up. But he won anyway, so not a major issue. (No new tournaments to post right now, so catching up on some previous events).
