  • Because vpnc is for IPSEC VPN and OpenConnect is for SSL VPN.

And as far as I know, there is still no NetworkManager plugin for OpenConnect.

  • Yes, vpnc is for IPSEC VPN. You can't use that. But vpnc calls a script, called vpnc-script, to set up the routing and DNS for the VPN after it has connected.

OpenConnect is designed to use the *same* script. See the openconnect documentation (on the web site) for details.

There has been a NetworkManager plugin for OpenConnect since 2008.

  • Er, why would you set up routing manually rather than using a vpnc-script to do it automatically?

In fact, why wouldn't you be using NetworkManager instead of running openconnect from the command line anyway?
