Perhaps this comes late, but I had an idea at the end of the level.
You encounter Wario (if it is your first time playing the level) sitting on a throne simhilair to the throne in Mario Land 2, but Mario (or whoever you are playing) tries to tell Wario about the crisis, and that they need his help.
Wario laughs at this and sees it as not of his consern, because their lackeys gave him a present to make sure he would not be an enemy of them. But, it turns out to be the Black Jewel. A boss fight.
