15th APPCED Closed After Adopting Kuala Lumpur, Declaration
The Two day 15th General Assembly of the Asia Pacific Parliamentarians' Conference on Environment and Development (APPCED) held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia from 7th to 8th June, 2011 was formally closed today after adopting the Kuala Lumpur declaration.
The declaration adopted by over twenty participant countries, acknowledged climate change and its impacts on environmental, economic and social-cultural wellbeing constitute one of the most pressing challenges of our time;
Declaration expressed the concern on the slow pace in the United Nations (UN) negotiations towards the full implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The declaration further Acknowledged that Parliamentarians as legislators can and should play a key role in encouraging their respective legislative bodies to embrace climate resilient and climate friendly policies and to craft effective and meaningful legislation to address climate change in a fair and equitable manner.
It also urged respective governments to develop and adopt national policies to enable the full implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Declaration also expressed the need to assist developing and vulnerable countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change, mobilize resources to enhance the important role for the tourism industry in building awareness on the drivers and impacts of climate change and educate the public about the need to implement response measures.
Pakistani delegates Mr. Hameedullah Khan Afridi, MNA and Mr. Naseer Bhutta,MNA played a key role in drafting the declaration.
It was also agreed that the next APPCED will be held in Nepal.
Later, H.E. Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang, President of the Senate, Malaysia, declared the 15th APPCED conference closed. The Deputy Chairman Senate, Mir Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali and other Pakistani delegates including Senator, Ms. Saeeda Iqbal, Senator Mr. Rehmatullah Kakar, Senator Mr. Abdur Rashid, Senator, Ms. Kalsoom Parveen also attended the closing session.
While addressing the Conference, the President of Senate, Malaysia said that climate change is one of the today's most critical issues that affects, or will affect the human population as whole as it relates of all aspects of our societies. He stress the need for understanding the underlying causes of climate change, examine the present and future effects of climate change and come up with new ways to tackle the current threat of climate change .
The countries which attended the conference included, China, Canada, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Iran and Iraq, Korea, Solomon Island, Maldives ETC.
The Deputy Chairman senate of Pakistan also presented gifts to various heads of delegates, including China, India Korea, Nepal and Sri Lanka
On Thursday, the participants will be visiting the Banghuris Homestay and will be briefed by the management on Homestay tourism product. The delegation later will attend a tree plantation ceremony and will visits Coffee Plantation, crackers processing factory, and will take a tour around Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia.
