A model Ringbom Stirling engine made from old hard drives, syringe, a car shock absorber cylinder, some Neodymium magnets, some tin cans and some tubing. The combustion area is surrounded by a skirt made from fire cement. I don't own a lathe, so no turning was involved in making this engine. The tools involved were a metal file, a power drill, a propane torch, several screwdrivers, silver solder, a ruler. And a lot of patience.

  • How can I build one? Do you have a plan?

  • @fernandesilyt Sorry, I don't have any plan, built by trial and error, mostly error.... Looking back, this was not a very good one, my later ones are more powerful.

  • Great work, love the magnetic spring,

    AC :)

  • Thanks, the magnetic spring idea came to me after I saw a TV program about Neodymium magnets. I did vandalise a couple of hard drives prior, so I had an idea about their strength, but it did not occur to me to use them in that fashion till I saw that program which included levitation demos.

  • fase I misspelled it was ment too be phase . And would affect the magnetic phase."Or spring tention." as you are using it.

  • Sir would you not ? Be able to make a throughtle for this by mounting another magnet above the valve head of the displacer, and then useing a mechinism to close or open it? Thus changing the reciprical fase?

  • Cheers mate, it was fun making it too.

  • Excellent project and explanation. Especially with limited tools to build --John---
