Tony Christie - I Did What I Did For Maria 1972

Sun rise this is the last day
that I'll ever see
out in the court-yard
they're ready for me
but I go to my Lord with no fear
'cos I did what I did for Maria.

As I rode into town
with the sun going down
all the windows were barred
there was noone around
for they knew that I'd come
with my hand on my gun
and revenge in my heart for Maria
my dearest departed Maria.

Take an eye for an eye
and a life for a life
and somebody must die
for the death of my wife
yes I did what I did for Maria
I did what I did for Maria.

Laughter echoed across for
the end of the street
there was the man
I was burnin' to meet
and my mind was so calm and so clear
as I took my revenge for Maria.

And he fell to the ground
raisin' dust all around
but I knew he was dead
long before he went down
it was quick it was clean
made it easy on him
which is more than he did for Maria
When he did what he did for Maria.

Take an eye for an eye
and a life for a life
and somebody must die
for the death of my wife
yes I did what I did for Maria
I did what I did for Maria.

(Instrumental)

Sun rise this is the last day
that I'll ever see
out in the court-yard
they're ready for me
but I go to my Lord with no fear
'cos I did what I did for Maria.

Take an eye for an eye
and a life for a life
and somebody must die
for the death of my wife
yes I did what I did

  • Little know fact: Maria was actually a toothless transvestite hooker...who ripped off her last John, hence he clipped Maria..sad but true folks.

  • Poor Tony, first he dreams of his Maria in Amarillo and then she gets killed and he is looking for revenge.

But perhaps in death they can stay together forever!

  • @phillipbailey70 You sound like a really nice person , Good heart and all.

I understand where your coming from. xx

  • ..male cameltoe!!.lol

  • @NoWurrezz11 I respect your view too, and I am not knocking Tony - he has an excellent voice. I guess I'm just questioning the whole setup. Could have been darker - could have used some support - and why the pier shots? Is this from some seaside special? If so it was probably targeted at some family audience, hence my comments about the subject matter. I am sincerely NOT after an argument, I'm just trying to learn more about this performance - thanks for your response :)

  • @phillipbailey70 I respect your view . . . Different strokes . . . for different FOLKS.

  • I'm not saying I don't like this song - I really do - but it's a strange subject to sing about while wearing that outfit.... and he could have done with a couple of dancers to stop him feeling so 'stared-at'... still, I bet he thanks Peter Kay for his revival.. :)

  • This song was out there when I was about 15 or 16. I was on a 'holiday' with Margery and we went to Balqhuidder, near Strathyre I have probably spelled this wrong. Anyway I always remember this song. Margery Morley , if you are out there , get in touch. My name used to be Elizabeth MacDonald.

  • after meeting tony last year he is a real gentleman who had all the time in the world to talk to fans,

  • @adlerauge001

That was a different bird ; that was Marie, very possibly the Marie who ran away from Cliff Richard.

  • Extra points for the cutsie dance moves over lyrics about murder and revenge and a hanging, while laughing at having to do it.

  • this bloke has the best voice i've ever heeeard - a much missed crooner - should have got himself a better agent - who ever you were his agent - bloody shame on u
