@redrum41987 ah so he is dividing by cos^2 jus for the hell of it now i see... so he using an already known trig identity and diving everything by a common trig term that still keeps the ratio the same so he could prove another trig identity is true....i get it hehe....just confusing to pull the cos^2 uot of no where lol..thank you for your help

@gbthebeast32 For cos^2(y)+sin^2(y)=1? With any equation, any at all, you can divided both sides with whatever you want. He did this because he was trying to get 1/cos^2(y). Since from trig, you know 1/cos(x)=sec(x). Say you had 1+x=3, dividing by both sides by any expression, say 2, still makes both sides equal.

My teacher never taught us how to derive these equations. I was amazed how easy this was. You really are a great Professor.
