it's looking to me like emd and GE cannot push the 6000hp barrier out of the way. GE AND EMD have both had failed attempts at making over about 4400hp. I know the emd fans will say that emds are superior to ge, but when you look at both companies neither has has a truly successful locomotive for YEARS.

hmmm........I'll have to disagree with you about the successful locomotive part of your statement. The "70" series has been a very successful locomotive. especially for UP. As for GE, Their dash-9 series has been very successful. It also looks like the GEVO is a success as well.

@lennyos With the exception of the EMD SD90s. They were 4 stroke. They also had antifreeze in the cooling system.

@Trainaholic2946 EMD's are 2 cycles. GE and ALCO prime movers are 4.
-
EMD 4 stroke has a lot more bass
-
is that a sd70ace behind it

@kf7strng GE has managed to upgrade CSX's AC6000s with GEVO-16s with a full rating, and will be spliting a 600 unit order with EMD for Chinese 6000s. My uncle (who works for CSX) says ES44AHs handle better than SD70ACes.

thats the sound of the rare "H" engine sound- thats 6250 horses under that hood!!------ they are an endangered species-film or photo them soon before they are extinct!!!!!

if they sit for long enough they do shut them down, in winter months the units will fire up on their own when it gets cold enough... just to prevent them from freezin up.
-
@iusetano It is!
This unit is in Unstoppable. If you freeze frame the film there the guy tries to throw the switch and just after the train gets away from them you'll see a group of guys that are sitting around chuckling at them. Notice the unit placed in the background as your freeze framing the film.

@Lightwolf333 I'm going to have to look now... but it would make sense... come out of Butler, hit the wye outside of Zele, hit 28, cross the bridge, go past Greentree...

why do they just leave them running? its stupid

You don't just jump in and fire one up... take some time to get them up to temp and ready to run. This is an engine facility here, hard to say, but it may have come out of the shop from a rebuild and was in a break in process.
They also run pretty much all winter too, so they don't freeze. And no, most locomotives don't have antifreeze either... eats the metal in the motor.
