phew, made the move to directx 10 and geometry shaders. Everything is more or less where it was 3 weeks ago. I also took the time to upgrade the lighting and took a wrong turn with an ambient occlusion type thing (which didn't pan out). It still needs a bit of work (the frustum culling is a bit ropey atm, and it could do with a bit of refactoring) but it's working well and so far i've reduced the memory requirements by a factor of 6.
