Canon EOS 7D VS Sony FX1000 (Quality Test)

This is a Canon EOS 7D VS Sony FX1000 video quality test. In the video, Canon EOS 7D looks little bit better quality than Sony FX1000. Because Sony can only set down to Shutter Speed 50, and Canon allows to set down to Shutter Speed 30. Also Sony only records in 1440x1080, but Canon can do 1920x1080. I won't say which one is better. Because they are both using different build in quality.

It depends what you're doing, because Canon EOS 7D was not designed for video recording. Such as, mono sound recording, no auto focus and hard to do the zoom in by hand. And also not every lenses comes with image stabilizer. But SONY FX1000 was designed for video shooting. It has a stereo sound recording, auto focus, and video stabilizer. And also it is very easy to do the zoom in by pressing the zoom in button.

I would say Sony FX1000 is good for doing a "Home video, News or sports video", and Canon EOS camera is good for making a "Short Film". However, they are both really good cameras.

A guy I hire to film some wedding videos with me uses a canon 7d and we couldn't find the setting to get it to shoot in 1440x1080. It had other options, most lower, so he shot with 1920x1080.

I shoot all my weddings with my sony equipment so its all 1440x1080.

what did we miss?

@jbraly Hi there, did you use HDV tape with your sony equipment?? The reason is, Sony HDV tapes did not support Full HD format, it has only max on 1440x1080 with 50i or 60i which is called "1080i".. And the Canon 7D shoots Full HD format with 24p or 25p, which is called "1080p". The sony 1440x1080 is for TV programs, and 7D 1920x1080 is for films!! So the quality looks quite different... @powerofcelica Thanks for the reply. What tapes should I use then I wonder? My cameras are 1080i. (HC7 and a HD1000U Sony)

Also, I wonder if there is a 3rd party add-in or effects plugin that could "mimic" the "look" that one gets from a camera like the canon with its 1920x1080 resolution?

@jbraly , sorry for late reply!! Two of your models HC7 and HD100U are the same, it only supports 1080i, which is 1440x1080. You can't really change the resolution unless you upgrade to a new camcorder. Sorry... But both of your cameras are still very nice. They both have a good quality in videos. So you may definitely use it for another few years... cheers,

@powerofcelica makes sense (now to raise some more money)... funny thing... my Sonys have something called "Cinematic mode" which pretends to be 24p... it works for me for now!
