Irving Aaronson & His Commanders - Ya Gotta Know How To Love (H.Warren), Victor 1926

NOTE: Irving AARONSON (b.1895 in NYC - d.1963 in NYC) American jazz pianist and big band leader. He learned piano at the David Mannes School for music and by the age of 11 his piano performances could be heard in silent movie theaters (called nickelodeons).

In the early 1920s he led the Versatile Sextette, later renamed under the name of the Crusaders Dance Band. Having success, the band signed with the Victor label company where the band name was changed to Irving Aaronson and his Commanders. From 1926 to 1929, the band got a lot of success creating the well known "Let's Misbehave", in 1927 and by Irene Bordoni's side, they appeared in Cole Porter's Broadway show, in 1928. Through the years, the band played with a number of good musicians such as Phil Saxe, Joe Gillespie and later to be known as band leaders were Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa and Tony Pastor. In 1935, he was the lead performer in the radio program Irving Aaronson Orchestra on NBC.

In 1945, the MGM studios hired him as a musical supervisor, after his musician career. Some sources say Aaronson retired at 65, other have him working till his death. He died of a heart attack in 1963, at 68 years old. His interment was located in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.

  • Roaring music and a delightful visual tasting of the 20's modern, spunky, fun loving dames.

  • Hi D., thanks for your as usually, so kind comment, given to the same fan of these delightful "spunky, fun loving dames" as you are. Signed: G.

  • "ya gotta know..." how much i enjoyed this aaronson delight: very much. thank you.

  • I also love that little band so much. The only pity is, so few sides they recorded ever! If Irving Aaaronson had had more influences in the worls od the recording companies of the Roaring Twenties, , it's him who'd have been the true "King Of Jazz", instead of Whiteman... who was overestimated, in my opinion... Rather reluctantly I upload Whiteman's recordings here

  • Lovely surprise on the eve of my latest journey to "my" beloved Europa. Only one thing will be missing: this man I know who makes such wonderful videos. I think he's from Poland.

  • B., thank you for the loveliest compliment you gave me, just before your entering into that big silver plane, just before your trip to the land of Tamara, d'Annunzio and the best ruccola, mozzarella, tomatoes & Modena vinaigrette salad in the world. See you soon!

  • Indeed the 1920's were a great period. It's such a shame America relied to much on Wall Street during this time as well. The laissez-faire policies of the day slowly led America, and the rest of the world, into a Great Depression

  • Beautiful Photos !!!!!

  • Wonderful Aaronson and love very much the Bennett sisters photo with those typical twenties hats. It is the summun to see such beauties modeling this incredible fashion! Many thanks Grzegorz!

  • ooLALA!

  • Hi Lana, that's interesting what you're writing. That girl at 1:59 has been cut out by me from some ad. And - that magnified face suddenly clearly shows the linkeage between Tamara's art and popular commercial iconography of 1920s. This is not my argument AGAINST Lempicka's art - God! never! - But it's only what Parisian left bank artists, who were in disagreement with Tamara's ideas of serving the "uper classes" with her art - rose in their criticism against her

  • Genia, and , OK with the 1:21 dame, but please, wear sometimes that gold-edged dress as at 1:15! You forgot, Rudy bought it for you for that Coco's party after his "Sheik"'s premiere in Nice? Bad girl, you're neglecting his presents, Dear!

  • Yes, I also just love that line! :-)
