This a montage of photos is of Morris Island S.C., where the Battle of Battery Wagner was staged on July 18, 1863. This battle is portrayed in the Academy Award winning movie "Glory."

The all African American 54th Massachusetts's was "the tip of the spear" in the nighttime assault on the Confederate earthworks at the mouth of Charleston Harbor.

The photographs are mostly of the 54th Massachusetts, along with a few other all black units from the Civil War. The other shots are of Morris Island, as it looks today as well as during the Civil War.

This was the largest Battle fought on South Carolina soil during the Civil War.

The Elton John song, "The Retreat" was a perfect soundtrack for this video, and has always been one of my favorites. The lyricist, Bernie Taupin, has an affinity for our Nations past. His words paint a vivid mental image, which I hope by my use of period photos, bring alive a time and place that was battlefield of horrors on that hot and humid day back in the summer of 1863.

The Union casualties were 1,515, killed, wounded and missing, while the Confederates lost only 174.

  • loved you videos, just watched your fathers gun video 20 times!!!! I was wondering if you knew about the 79th U.S. Colored Infantry, who fought at Island Mounds, Missouri, on October 28, 1862. They were the first black troops used in the war. HH

  • Great video & song to boot! I had the opportunity to visit the African American Civil War Museum & Memorial today. It's reopening was July 18th, the anniversary of the Battle of Battery Wagner. It of course, was appropriately timed for this. Mr. Frank Smith is it's curator & a man of outstanding knowledge on the war & esp the U.S. Colored Troops. The museum is small but it is rich in it's educational value & will continue to grow in size soon. In any event, I esp enjoyed your vid re; Folly Beach

  • I saw "Glory" today in school its such a good movie.

  • Good Video Robert. Morris Island, one of my most favorite places!
