Taiwan enjoys a sub tropical climate, which has noticeable yet not severe changes in season that result in cool yet mild winters and hot summers reaching an average high of mid thirties centigrade. With lush sub-tropical ecosystems, alpine forests, deep winding gorges like the famous Taroko Gorge, tropical beaches and marine ecology Taiwan really is the Ilha Formosa. To preserve the beauty of Taiwan there are seven national parks and 13 national scenic areas such as Alishan in Chiayi county or Sun Moon lake in Nantou, which is also home to the Thao tribe.
