Here are some experiments I did in trying to mimic the style of W. Carlos' synthesizer technique and style of timbres. Carlos was using a 1960's era patchable modular Moog synthesizer with a different architecture than that of the Alesis Andromeda synthesizer. Each one has some advantages and disadvantages over the other but both use analog circuitry.

This video includes about 3/5 of a harpsichord sonata by Scarlatti. It is played by hand on a velocity sensitive keyboard, one monophonic passage at a time, and overdubbed onto multi-track.

Be sure to check out other related videos in my synthesizer series, and check back now and then as I will be posting more in the near future.

Just in case anybody wants to download the audio files heard in A6 Andromeda baroque demos, they're located at the links below. These incomplete pieces are all that I've done on the A6 in W. Carlos' style, so I don't have anymore at this time, for those who are asking.

  • Well done!

    Is this programmed or played?

How many other Scarlatti sonatas have you done?

It was Walter Carlos who got me into Scarlatti with the BankAmericard Christmas TV ad in about 1970 or so.

    Thanks for posting.

  • @werderwayne My reply is about 4 months late, but to answer your questions about my synthesized Scarlatti: It's played by hand by me (as documented in the video info box). I've done about half of another sonata just as a fast test to try a 3/4 speed recording technique, but that's not on youtube... I also remember that Scarlatti / BankAmericard commercial. I got into Walter Carlos and synthesized Bach after hearing Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring from Switch-On Bach during a nature show on dolphins.

  • This is very close to the Carlos version, but I can hear where you made differences, some chordal, some ornamental. Nice job!

I love the Carlos albums. They were my introduction to synthesizer in the 1960's.

I believe you did perform this. But maybe, next time, you might want to alter the patches just a tad more so they are "Carlos--like" but not too close (lest it confuse some people).

    Thanks for the video.

  • @clydesight My reply is about 5 months too late, but just to set things straight again on my synthesized Scarlatti, my patches are completely different than Carlos'. I did it in the style of Carlos but didn't listen to and imitate the timbres Carlos used. The fact that there may be confusion is because of how Carlos-like I managed to get it to sound overall.

  • Please remove the 30 second intro, >_>

  • MoonSideMKDS, first off, I can't remove the 25 second intro since I know of no way of replacing a video with a new one. Second, the intro gives info about the video, like who did it and what synth was used. Third, because youtube allows you to grab the play slider and move to a forward position in the video, anybody can easily skip over the intros in all of my videos.

  • @belovedconsole I can't figure out whether you're being sarcastic or not. Just to clarify, since maybe you didn't read the video info box, this is completely my performance and my synthesis using the Alesis Andromeda synth. All the sounds are different than Carlos', so yes, listen to Carlos' version then mine, and you will see it's not anything like the original recording.

  • OK good! But I wonder what synthesizer was used for the speech in the beginning?

  • @ProphetVS I wrote that comment drunk, forgot about it, and just now discovered it and am deeply sorry. It is meaningless, I cannot remember writing the thing except I came here and there was the comment. I apologize to viewers and have personally apologized to the author. It is obvious from the first notes this is not the original Carlos recording and there are all sorts of interesting things happening with this version. I do not drink anymore, I'm sorry I was so rude and completely wrong.

  • @MaxwellTurn I am sorry for the horrible comment. It was written drunk and I just discovered it. I don't drink anymore, for obvious reasons. I have personally apologized to the author, but I cannot easily undo such stupidity I offered in that comment. I'm sorry for the negativity I caused.

  • @Elhardt I just now realized that I had a bunch of email from people responding to my comment. I hadn't ever checked my emails on here. The comment was completely in error-- I used to be an alcoholic and I would leave stupid comments and completely forget. I am very sorry. I just deleted my original comment but now realize I shouldn't have-- so that people could see my idiotic comment that everyone was responding to. Very sorry again, I have been sober for 2 years now and this was terrible

  • superb!

  • @belovedconsole You must be the world's most accomplished expert in psychopathology if, after listening to this musical offering, you are able to determine that the person who uploaded it is a sociopath. Of course, it is probably closer to the truth that you are probably a fuckwit who likes to give the impression that he is a somebody and not a nobody.

  • very well, it's a excellent job!!! bravo!!!

  • je suis très heureuse de retrouver ce disque, volé il y a 10 ans!!!! Je l' écoutais en 1967; mème qu ' il jouait en 16 tours!!!!!!!!!!!!
