Through the use of special effects we retrace the 15-billion-year journey from the big bang to the present. We also hear the tragic story of the martyrdom of Hypatia, the woman scientist of ancient Alexandria. This is the famous episode on nuclear war in which Dr. Sagan argues that our responsibility for survival is owed not just to ourselves, but also to the cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring.

  • Could anyone tell me what is the name of the music between 2:00-3:20?

    Thanks.

  • If there is a God, I hope he sounds like Carl Sagan

  • "These are some of the thing that hydrogen atoms do, given 15 billion years of evolution" - Wow

  • The last part with the empty spaceship of the imagination brings a tear to my eye. There will never be anyone like Carl Sagan ever again. What a beautiful man.

  • @ceemsc Couldn't agree with you more about promoting morality to prevent incidents like the Holocaust. But again, I repeat that religious writings (holy books) provide the sort of "moral" thinking that leads to murder and racism. This is why I say, that morality is not a product of religion but a secular, evolutionary bi-product if you will. Hitler, for the record, was a Roman Catholic and repeatedly used God and Jesus in many of his speeches to speak out against the jews.

  • @torontoBluejays87 Science can't explain moral & wise judgement e.g. The Golden Rule :- Christianity = Do unto others as you would like to have been done to yourself; Bhuddism = What Goes around Comes Around; Confucianism = Do not subject anyone to anything you are not willing to undertake yourself.etc. From a Science Point; Might is Right and if you are not strong enough, tough you do not deserve to exist. We need Morality to ensure that atrocities like the Holocaust or WW2 do not happen again.

  • @ceemsc Completely disagree with you on the morality and ethics point. Religion was responsible for the murdering of enlightened people for thousands of years. We are so fortunate to have had men like Carl Sagan be born in our present day, for his thinking surely would have had him tortured or burned at the stake in not so recent times by Christians. Oh and if the only reason you don't rape and murder is because of the "eye in the sky" than I feel sorry for you. Morality is a secular creation.

  • @torontoBlujays - The Basis/framework structure of our modern ethics. - Hope to face this complex, dangerous world & Universe which we struggle to survive in. - A Greater Power & Faith to turn to who really cares when life doesn't go to plan. - Charity to those who don't have the benefits of health, education & shelter which we take for granted. - A belief that we're not just a tiny piece of dust with a set time on stage, but each & every one of our lives is significant & valued.

  • @DagoCR1 finally someone understands.. we're on the same frequency, my friend :]

  • I want any devout religious person to list me some benefits that religion has done for Humanity. Has Religious thinking launched space ships into the Cosmos? Has religious thinking ever told the story of the very small atoms that make up everything we know? All of our true and proven knowledge is a product of science. All of the cruel violence and further segregation of the human species is thanks to religious thinking. It's time to grow up and listen to the Carl Sagan's of our day.....
