Rod's oral and written skills were impeccable and form and structure in his written work were clearly evident to me at all times. I can't imagine, as a student of writing, submitting a story idea for Rod's evaluation without first implementing correct punctuation and applied grammar. Earlier, Rod seemed to say that the idea predominates over matters like grammar and spelling. Idea is everything, he said. While that is true, poor spelling and poor grammar make for terrible writing. I loved Rod.

I can't thank you enough for posting these videos. There's so much dreck on YouTube, and then every so often you stumble across something like this.
I could've listened to Serling for hours. He's inspiring but completely honest about the hard slog of writing; he imparts a lifetime of knowledge in very few words yet seems even more thrilled to be challenged by and learn from his students.
He seems like the best teacher I never had. Wonder where these young folk ended up...

@skydark Very true. I believe everyone is creative but not everyone is creative in the same manner. I mean I envy people who can write in more than one genre, me, I can only write in horror and the supernatural. It must also have something to do with your genes I guess.

@thechaz83 No one is born taught and those who get good at it have to work relentlessly in the learning of their craft. We can't all be Da Vinci's, but we can all experiment and push the boundaries of our ability to express ourselves in whatever art we choose.
The problem is some people do it in school and then adult life's responsibilities make it hard to follow up.

@thechaz83 Why is it that people think that creativity is completely non existent in some people? It is true that some are more creative than others, but even the most creative person will have to go through great lengths of hard work and dedication and exercise to transform it in something that can be appreciated by others.
I think all people of normal intelligence have the ability to be creative, since it has been the defining reason for our extraordinary evolution.

@thechaz83 Most definitely. It seems that the ones that're truly creative either don't get much credit or they're downplayed in favor of the stupidity and simplicity that consists of nothing but fluff...

I was responding to a comment made by mmorell1, where he talks about people who fool themselves into believing that he or she is capable of becoming a writer. The above comment was supposed to be said with a hint of sarcasm. People in general "Why would they produce something terrible and put it out on the market. I don't know why those type of people would want to taint literature. If you cannot express yourself properly then why be a writer?
It's funny how some people are making comments in frustration about what art is and what art is not. This is not what I am encouraging. Let's be mature, and understand that if every artist took their art with that much rigidity, they would never get past the 1st page. Some compassion please to art and the artists!

I cannot figure out why a person who is not able to produce or express a creative idea would want to try and sully up art in the first place. Maybe its just me.

Please explain?!? I don't get a sense that Serling is forcing the art of writing on anyone ...

That seems like a waste of time to me. That comment didn't have anything to do with Rod. People who are not creative should focus on other things. If they know they are not good at being creative why send it out. Do they think they will get money??? It's sad.

Why post it then?
