am i wrong, i was under the impression that the dueling sheild was used with out another wepon, for trial by combat to settle dispute, and its the odd shape and design it is to create a level playing feild between the combatants who wouldn't have been used to fighting with a sheild like it.

@jibgt6 The shield is depicted in a variety of medieval fighting manuals both on it's own, or with the longsword or wooden mace (kolben). Hope that helps.
