If you break the song down into it's individual phrases, you'll see the chords C13, A13, F13 and D13 that repeat throughout the song.

The best way I can explain it is, basically it's playing inside the chords without focusing on the root, like a non-functional harmony kind of thing.

So it's kind of beyond playing particular scales or modes. But if I were to recommend an exercise to train your hands I would say pentatonic patterns would be your best bet.
