They call it the Graveyard of the Pacific. Heavy seas and unpredictable weather. A rugged, lonely coastline. Countless ships and sailors taken by its fierce storms and jagged rocks. Westward, nothing to see but North Pacific swells, until Hawaii finally climbs above the horizon. Men have sailed the route for centuries. Now, one man will put his trust in his legs, his heart, and his mind to make a historic journey.

In June, 2010, Greg Kolodziejzyk will attempt to become the first person in history to navigate this notorious stretch of ocean under his own power. His plan pedal a custom-made state-of-the-art human-powered boat 3000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, from Victoria, Canada to Hawaii. The world-record attempt is expected to take between 40 to 80 days.

In this 2 part video, Greg Kolodziejzyk, Jordan Hanssen and Ken Fortney take WiTHiN human powered boat to Vancouver Island for sea trials.

  • True - many man-powered crossings from NORTH AMERICA to Hawaii, but none from Vancouver Island to Hawaii. Also, there has never been a solo pedal powered crossing from North America to hawaii.

  • did he do it

  • What is the cruising speed that you can maintain over distance at sea?

  • definitely get rid of the music. It is atrocious

  • Thoroughly agree (about the sizzle zazzle).

Fascinating project! I came here from the gizmag article.

This project is so amazing, rich, novel, Amelia Earhartish, one's mind wants to absorb it. The music prevents that to a significant degree.

I'll look for a video where the sounds inside or outside the boat are conveyed during calm or more wavy periods.

Thank you for the video - it was nice to experience what a bit of the 2 months may be like.

Fascinating project! (Wish I had one! :)

  • zomg why?

  • Didn't anyone check? There have been many man powered crossings

  • It would be much nicer to maybe dispense with the sizzle music and maybe talk about more about the boat, the mission, what you're trying to accomplish with this sea trial, what challenges remain. Instead we get a music video.

    Anyway, looks cool.

  • Needs a fold down dvd screen right infont of ur face which could run off ur wind genorator and a sat nav controlled steering system and you would be set!
