This was my very first powwow...and it will NOT be my last (Creator willing). All of this footage was "permitted" and I turned my camera off during any "private" ceremonies (which were announced beforehand). I do wish to point out one correction... the "Jingle Dancer" should have been labeled a "Grass Dancer" ... my bad! (Jingle Dancers are women only! ooops!). A special "Wado!" to Jeff Bunyard who convinced me to attend the event ... and a special moment of reflection for my parents who usually attended the powwows at "Indian City" in Anadarko, Oklahoma.

  • No ... I don't know any of the songs. Wish I did. I would like to be taught the proper way to sing. And yes, I found that person very annoying also.

  • WHY was that woman wearing a war bonnet at 3:37?????? Why does eveyone's war bonnets MATCH????????

  • I think the obvious answer is a commercial one. Everyone wants to participate and the "war bonnet" is stereotypical "Indian" accoutrement. They likely all got the bonnets from the same vendor. Many of these participants are the "white guests." Notice the music is chanting "Disney Land". I want to say so much more, but these little boxes to not allow much. -Li

  • I think that's one of Black Lodge's powwow songs for Tiny Tots... The war bonnets NEED TO GO! I can't believe they still sell those cheap ugly things.. and probably those rubber tomahawks and spears as well.

  • I couldn't agree with you more. They are tacky. I did not see any tomahawks/spears, but I was not really looking for them. My brother bought a knife at last powwow. (Made in China!). [shakes head in sad disgust] ... -Li

  • How is this Cahokian vs. modern Plains Indian dances?

    Thanks

  • I don't think anyone really knows anything about the Cahokian dances, or even the language they spoke. The powwow at the Cahokia mounds is (like with most powwows these days), a mix of Native Americans (and non-NA) from all over. The dances have become standardize (grass dance, fancy shawl, jingle, etc.). (Can't write much in these little comments).
