Amid hearlding trumpets, everyone tuned into "Your Hit Parade" on Saturday nights knew it was time to discover the NUMBER ONE song in the land set to a musical skit with either Gisele MacKenzie, Dorothy Collins, Russell Arms or Snooky Lanson doing the honors. During the week of May 7, 1955, it was Gisele's turn to sing the number song: as an elementary school art teacher, where she also gave her pupils a musical history lesson about Davy Crockett. Gisele often commented in later years that the song just wouldn't go away...it was among the top 7 tunes week after week after week.

  • We all knew the great pioneers and Cowboys back then. I doubt if these kids nowadays even know who Davy Crockett is.

  • I doubt if most of the kids today know where New York City is...let alone who Davy Crockett is!

  • Many of the big artists of the time had 78's on this tune: Ernie Ford on Capitol; Fess Parker on Columbia; Bill Hayes on Cadence. There might have been others, but I believe these were the big sellers.

  • I doubt I knew the name of the singer on the 7" 78 I had of this song. Was it Frankie Laine? I can't remember.
