Simple penetration and expansion test of the Winchester PDX1 bonded .45 ACP 230 grain hollowpoint, using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. Test gun is a Colt Government model, Series 80, 5" barrel. Advertised muzzle velocity is 920 fps; my 5 shot chronographed average was 903 fps.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Early on, I used wetpack for ammo testing, with or without denim. Beginning in 2011 I use SIM-TEST calibrated to ballistic gel specs plus 4 layers of denim. The denim is an IWBA standard simulating the density of heavy clothing. Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. Even by adding bone, additional clothing, etc., there are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. The law-abiding citizen bears ultimate responsibility for their ammunition choice and insuring reliability in their handgun.

CAMERA: Sony HDR-CX110 recorded at FX setting, 24 mbps.
EDITING: Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10, MPEG4, 1920 x 1080, 24p, 25 mbps.

  • Are you sure about Lindsay Lohan ? j/k

  • @purkjason

Well, I guess that could depend on how you look at it!

  • Sir, how would your measurements relate to real life self defense? Sensitive subject I know.

  • @MrStrawberrification

You could take it as a representation of a best-case scenario and hope to achieve similar results. There are just way too many factors beyond our control....movement, barriers, body composition, clothing, adrenalin, drugs, the will to live, etc.

    1. I left out BAD information? Please explain.

    2. What other two rounds? If you are referring to the G30 wetpack test, it failed to expand, one shot.

Expectations of seeing any round perfectly expand in this type of media, through heavy cloth, are not realistic; also in the real world. Just because a bullet doesn't have 100% symmetrical "photo op" expansion should not make it a failure.

  • @LosAngelesWeedSmoker

    Facts:

The PDX1 at .747 and 14 3/4" may or may not stop a threat with one shot.

The .45 Hornady Critical Defense at .747 and 14 3/4" may or may not stop a threat with one shot.

All bullets can fail due to circumstances beyond the ammo mfg's control.

    Don't expect a full-frontal stationary shot in a self-defense situation.

There are no more JFK "magic bullets".

Lindsay Lohan is a poor role model for teenage girls.

  • They are bascially the ole black talon round ..I love this ammo ...

  • @darkwriter77 I know this is an old post, but you can find them at SGammo online or at mahsupplies as well. Both online. Both great prices. On Winchester, HST, and Gold Dot

  • I might be playing "Captain obvious" there, but it just amazes me at how much engineering is put into those projectiles.

  • Making a hollowpoint is a real science in itself, for it is a lot more than just drilling a hole in the tip. It also requires making weakening cuts, and using the appropriate alloys to ensure the proper balance between penetration and expansion.

  • @perspicacity89 Yes, and it is also not reusable, the Sim Test is re usable, a very good selling point.

  • Didnt care for this ammo for my xd-45. It shot very wild..bad batch maybe?

Just to make sure, I loaded REM Golden Saber 185gr and it shot really well. Also a box of UMC 50 rnds and nothing but flawless results.

bad batch or bad ammo for xd..not sure but that was my experience.

  • Is actual FBI-spec ballistics gel expensive?

  • what caused that cavitation? didnt get that with the Speer Gold Dot

  • have u done any test with the winchester. white box jhp with Sim TEST MEDIA?

  • Much better results than with the .38 caliber PDX1 ammo that was tested.
