It's dead week (the week before Senior Week), and we seniors had to make our own fun, so we decided to build a Skittle sorter.

This is only a few hours of work, and it can currently sort the Red, Orange, and Yellow skittles from the Purple and Green.

We'll be adding more stages later to sort out the specific colors.

How it works: At the very top of the sorter, there's a darkened chamber that contains a red LED and a photo transistor. The photo transistor can pick up how much red the Skittles are reflecting. Yellow, Orange, and Red both reflect a lot of red while green and purple don't.

When the photo transistor picks up a large signal, the circuit turns on a solenoid (located on the back) which turns the sorting flap.

The logic was all done with analog components.

  • Well done with your electronics. Next step: professionalism. If the language was better, this could be used to encourage education among young students.

  • @destinws2 Oh come on. Three drunk seniors during senior week are not really looking to educate anyone. We were just bored.

Though you may have just motivated me to start an EE podcast...

That's my gig. Motivation for science! Expect a friend request soon.

  • @Acefearkiller All in time. I just finished up classes and will be graduating soon. Then I'll finally have some time to finish up development on the bullet counter. I'll keep you all posted.

  • Very cool indeed , hey what about the bullet counter , are you going to make and sell them??
