The FRF for Columbia - 20th February 1981. There is limited audio of this event. I have added what there is available. The footage starts with the Crew Access Arm being retracted. The FRF is shown twice, from 2 angles. The 2nd angles footage is not as clear as the first. There is a great shot from above (a view that was used in the early OFT flights for liftoff) There are also some views inside the LCC. Hugh Harris is the NASA commentator.

  • was the crew onboard for this test?

  • there was no crew onboard for the FRF

  • Are these FRF tests still performed?

  • The FRF was only performed before the first flight of each shuttle orbiter - so were performed on STS-1 Columbia, STS-6 Challenger, STS-41D Discovery, STS-51J Atlantis and STS-49 Endeavour....the exceptions being the FRF for STS-26 Discovery - the flight after Challenger in 1986 and Challenger also performed a second FRF before STS-6 because of SSME problems...hope that all helps!

No, it's only to test the total systems of new shuttles.
