Drill and blast tunneling involves the sequential process of drilling, blasting, removal of blasted rock, and support of newly exposed rock. In Norway this process is typically completed in five metre long sections.

During the construction of an underground cavern NGI collected lidar data (with a Faro Photon 120) everyday during and aligned each scan to the previous days' images. This data collection allowed the generation of a full scale model of the natural rock conditions.

The above movie illustrates the development of the cavern; the top section of the video is an overhead view of the tunnel showing two excavation faces. The bottom section of the video is the side view of the development process, and hence only illustrating what appears to be on direction of development.
