Are reparations for African Americans needed to compensate for past wrongs? What connection do today's African Americans have to the injustices of the past? William A. Darity Jr., professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, examines.

  • @Deac14u i'm native american and i would trade my history with that of african americans, at least they prosper now, my people have had everything taken from us and even today we still have nothing. and yet i would not ask for reparations from the people who's ancestors enslaved, stole from and raped my ancestors as today people can not be held responsible for the actions of past generations.

  • were do mixed race people come in? all u need to do is provide concrete evidence, a direct link between themselves and a slave, this is Reparations for slavery not reparations for blacks.

  • @bamboozul: I was offended at your comments about the history of mexicans in the U.S. Are you ignoring the fact that most of what is now the southwest used to be Mexico? Are you also dismissing the large Mexican workforce that also helped "build" the country? As for Mexicans being promised something that was never delivered...have you ever heard of the U.S. Bracero Program? Probably not, you clearly are not well informed. Your racism against Mexicans blurred your view. A rich history indeed.

  • @mymattaponi1 I have family members who are ''white'' 1/16 - 1/32 black and they are the descendents of at least one slave.

  • Im black and my family owned slaves.

  • Reparations Now!

  • The one discourse that people are not mentioning here is the fact that African Americans are the ONLY people in the world who DO NOT know who they really are(i.e. our native tongue and languages, our specific tribe and culture, our namesake, customs, traditions) Everyone else in America, with the exception of the Native American, came here willingly and were not stripped of their true selves.

Companies like Aetna benefited from the slave trade by insuring slaves and paying slaveowners.

  • What about Chinese people?

  • If America had played fair with the slaves, America would be a GREAT country. The ex slaves just wanted peace and harmony.

  • if they do then who pays?many white people ancestors came here years after slavery ended and what about the white familys who have ancestors who died to help free those slaves?and how about the africans who have ancestors who sold those slaves,do they pay?

  • @malt8291 although mexicans have a rich history; it does not pertain to AMERICAN history in AMERICA. BLACK AMERICANS have HELPED to BUILD this country that YOU and I live in. were mexicans ever SLAVES in AMERICA? were you ever promised something and did not recieve it, like the natives in AMERICA or the BLACK AFRICAN in AMERICA? so when you say what about mexicans? what about them? in terms of reparations in AMERICA?

  • I'm not for reperations, but to think that slavery doesn't effect the lives of present day African Americans is ridiculous.
