"Chico Alvarez is a time-traveler. His voice rises as if from old wax records. His diction and intonation have the sweet quality of old Cuban Soneros. On the other hand, the band is slammin' very much in the here and now." - Luis Moreno, Yahoo Latin Jazz E-Group
38 years in the U.S., but remarkably, La Fiesta Del Mamoncillo goes back over 70 years to the 1930's in Havana Cuba. On Sundays Cubans in La Habana would gather together in Los Jardines de la Tropical to dance. The dance was given in a park that had lots of mamoncillo trees in it - some other cultures call them quenepas or limoncillos or just plain mamon. The dance was open to everyone but was mostly attended by Afro-Cubans, because back then, in Cuba, there was a club for the white and mulatto Cubans and another club for the black Cubans. El Club Cubano Interamericano, which was started by mainly Afro-Cubans around 1970, continued that tradition here in the U.S. and 38 years later, they are still going strong.
