I know that transporters were invented to save production cost of having a shuttlecraft landing on planets but I didn't knew they were this short of money that they couldn't use it in their script to rescue Sulu and the rest of the stranded crew member.

  • lol But wasn't the storm or something on the planet interfering with guiding a shuttle down? As such is usually the case on star trek for something like that.

  • Nup. The shuttlecraft were never mention throughout the episode and there were no mentions of storms or other interference.

From memory-alpha "One of the biggest mysteries about this episode is why Kirk simply didn't send a shuttlecraft down to the planet's surface to pick up the stranded men. Presumably, the episode was written and filmed before the existence of the hangar deck and shuttlecraft were established (In Galileo Seven)."

  • It shouldn't really have any impact story-wise, but they didn't actually have shuttle models until around the time of Galileo Seven. So they wouldn't have had any way of doing this scene.

  • the two who got killed on that episode were wearing the command color

  • I found it, it's from galileo seven... the man on the right side was the first person that was killed on the planet, and he wasn't a red shirt...

  • from which episode is the scene with the shuttle? 0:38

  • i guess the shuttles were broken

  • Oh right. It's been a long time since I've seen this episode so I wasn't sure if that was the case or not. The only thing I remember about sulu and the landing party's situation was that it got quite windy and wintry down there. I guess they could have said that was the only problem in sending a shuttle down but they apparently didn't.
