From: http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/music/statesong.html
Written in 1894 by Rev Dr. C. V. Waugh, a professor of languages at the Florida Agricultural College at Lake City, the song was said by the Legislature to have "both metric and patriotic merit of the kind calculated to inspire love for home and native State." Sung to the tune of "Maryland, My Maryland" a strongly Secessionist song written by James Ryder Randall in 1861 which turned into one of the biggest hits of the Confederacy and became a State song in the 1930's.

Lyrics:

Land of my birth, bright sunkissed land
Florida, my Florida
Laded by the Gulf and Ocean grand
Florida, my Florida

Of all the States in East or West
Unto my heart thou art the best
Here may I live, here may I rest
Florida, my Florida

The golden fruit the world outshines
Florida, my Florida
Thy gardens and thy phosphate mines
Florida, my Florida

In country, town, or hills and dells
Florida, my Florida
The rhythmic chimes of the school bells
Florida, my Florida

Will call thy children day by day
To learn to walk the patriot's way
Firmly to stand for thee for aye
Florida, my Florida

Yield their rich store of good supply,
To still the voice of hunger's cry-
For thee we'll live, for thee we'll die
Florida, my Florida

Also: Lauriger Horatius = "Laurel-crowned Horatio"? Latin scholars please advise.

actually, scratch that. I found out. I was right, it turns out. Here are links to all you need to know, including Latin words and sheet music:

  • I've never been to Florida too. I've been three times in the States, everytime in the west side. I've always thought that the east side is too populated and not as beautiful as the western lands. Maybe I'm wrong. Great to see you again mate. Hope you're doing fine.

    Paolo :-)

  • Megan would agree with you. She's from California. I wouldn't judge the East too harshly until you've seen Maine, however. I can't recommend Maine highly enough.

Thanks for watching. I hope you're well too, amico.

  • this is getting confusing!

  • Tell me about it. I just posted "The Song of Iowa" and that's the end of it now. Of the state songs, anyway. It was getting pretty repetitive up in this apartment.

  • they were good! i wonder if canadian provinces have any songs? i'm not sure.

  • Well we have "Gens du pays" in Quebec, but I don't know about anywhere else. I know a good song called "Saskatchewan" by Les Trois Accords (do you know them?) but it wouldn't be much of a provincial anthem.

  • This should definitely be Florida's state song. I could care less about "Swanee River". I always tell folks, though- you *got* a state song, at least. Virginia got all embarrassed about ours a few years back and got rid of it- ignoring the fact that we could've just changed the "plantation Negro" manner of the lyrics and been done with it.

  • OK, here's help on the facts. The name of the "official" state song is "Old Folks at Home." A commonly recognized alternative name is Swanee River (as mis-spelled in the song). Nobody calls it Old Swanee River (unless they don't know the topic of which they are speaking). I can see why the legislature was so happy to replace "Florida, My Florida" -- the lyrics are horrible, and the tune doesn't fit in the context of a state song.

  • i am born an raised in the swamps of florida disney and all the theme parks are a waste of money i could take yall on a week outdoor vacation for 300 dollars im no guide but do research befor you get raped by disney

  • Well, actually I forgot to say that I saw great pictures from Maine and Vermont, but those places are sorrounded by very populated areas. It's easier to get lost in the middle of nowhere in the west side (North California, Washinghton, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico). Miles and miles of silence.

Italy is a bit larger than Oregon. In Oregon live less than 4 million people, in Italy live more than 60 million. Here I hardly find a place to be factually alone.
