Well, selling records can't hurt. But it was never the most important thing. When the Clash released "London Calling," it was supposed to be priced as a double album. However, the band had the record company put two records in one sleeve to make it cheaper. Then, when "Sandinista" came out, it was a triple album, but to cover costs of pricing it like a single album, the band cut out their share of the profit entirely. They really understood their fans and what they could afford.

IF you got dropped then you got no distribution. Of course, times have changed. But back then, you could only afford to be as daring as your fans would let you i.e. as long as they were buying your records. That's the only way the Beatles got away with what they did. Punk, rock, rap, pop - it's all about sales bro.
