The Clash sold double and triple albums for the price of one, and was in debt to their music company until 1982. And it wasn't Joe Strummer or Mick Jones who starred in a butter commercial.

Plus their albums are better; Sex Pistols were as manufactured as Backstreet Boys.

Well, selling records can't hurt. But it was never the most important thing. When the Clash released "London Calling," it was supposed to be priced as a double album. However, the band had the record company put two records in one sleeve to make it cheaper. Then, when "Sandinista" came out, it was a triple album, but to cover costs of pricing it like a single album, the band cut out their share of the profit entirely. They really understood their fans and what they could afford.

@KirHARESETHgoesto11 Respect. From the fan's point of view. From a musician's point of view, selling records is the most important thing. If you didn't sell, you got dropped. IF you got dropped then you got no distribution. Of course, times have changed. But back then, you could only afford to be as daring as your fans would let you i.e. as long as they were buying your records. That's the only way the Beatles got away with what they did. Punk, rock, rap, pop - it's all about sales bro.
