i had a new toy arrive in the post; a CD converter that can be placed into the tape deck of an 8-bit machine and connected to any other audio source in order to load. This footage is of it loading Cybernoid 2 from the 52x CDROM drive in an external case that i've got balanced on top of the monitor.

  • Codemasters brought a CD compilation with 30 games on it I think back in the day which did this, so this is nothing new.

You can also do this with one of those cables that have a cassette attached to them and use an MP3 player like an ipod shuffle to stream the audio of the game too.

    all cool though!

  • This was done with one of those cables with a cassette attached to it... and no, not all MP3 players work because it's partly about volume levels, the one i tried simply couldn't get the right level for the Amstrad to "hear" it (the C64 i also tried that on could pick something up but not much).

The Codemasters CD compilation wasn't the only one either, there was another for the C64 from Rainbow Arts.

  • what is the name of this game ?

  • The information already says which game is being loaded, it's Cybernoid 2.

  • These tapes really should be recorded for posterity. Future generation really need to know what we went through in therms of loading errors and anticipation of the game itself!!

  • They are being preserved as such, the files used for the CD in the video were taken from an archive on the web and there are similar projects for the C64 and Spectrum out there.

  • @slinkyskunk they ca!! upto 285% faster. You have to compress the audio before dumping on CD

  • Cool computer!!

  • I am entriged by these tapes. Do they turn? Or does the wire simply feed into the read head with no mechanical movement?

  • Can I download games in the wav format from somewhere?

  • does anyone know how to run a DSK file on a real Amstrad CPC 464?

  • the Amstrad one was never released

  • Video nada especial; solo para los que recuperen el CPC despues de muchos años. Lo mejor: la música del Cybernoid que se me metio en la cabeza desde los años 80 ;)

  • It's a shame they can't load any faster when played from CD, but I guess you are dealing with the demodulation hardware inside the computer at that point

  • it was the only one for the Amstrad though. An iPod shuffle is meant to be pretty good for doing this.
