Clipped from the late 1950s film "Goodbye, Mr. Roach" produced by the Clemson College Extension Service
Before 1978, chlordane was also used as a pesticide on agricultural crops, lawns, and gardens and as a fumigating agent. Because of concerns over cancer risk, evidence of human exposure and build up in body fat, persistence in the environment, and danger to wildlife, the EPA canceled the use of chlordane on food crops and phased out other above-ground uses over the next 5 years. In 1988, when the EPA canceled chlordane's use for controlling termites, all approved use of chlordane in the United States stopped. Manufacture for export continues.

  • The reason chlordane was pulled in 1986 was do to the fact that Dows new Dursban could not compete with it in termite control. If you have enough money and enough of a lobby, you can demonize anything. And eveyone will believe you.

  • Good bye to Mr Roach and hello to cancer. !

  • Did anyone notice the "wind drift" as he was dusting in that manhole??

  • I thought this was also a Cigarette Additive?

  • As unfortunate as your situation is, you can't blame pesticides for genetics. I will end up with colon cancer as I'm predisposed to it. Most of the world was exposed to chlordane and the cancer rates have only increased with obesity rates. I guess it's easier to find something to blame other than ourselves when it comes to these things.

  • I'm one of the fortunate few who still have a jug of Chlordane sitting on the shelf. It's absolutely amazing stuff. A single foundation spray will keep cockies from coming in the house for 5 years. It is very toxic and you never want to spray where people will touch, but that aside, it does a fantastic job.

  • Its funny that here in 2009 people believe anything the goverment tells them.

  • I wish no harm to anyone concerning application of pesticides. 90% of all pesticide applications done by a private citizen are way beyond the EPAs label rate. Many, many times does a customer ask a tech to apply more of "the strong stuff that smells" because they think its better. Then there are those that want to see there home saved from termites, but dont want a termiticide used to stop it.

  • Isn't it funny how anything that gets in the way of Dow Chemical gets outlawed?? Look at refrigerants.. Did you know that Dow is the company who started blaming ozone depletion on refrigerants? Isn't it odd that Dow has replacements (patented) ready to go when they made the announcement?? We're all a world of tools.. just a bunch of muppets.

  • I have breast cancer cause as a farmer's daughter, was exposed to this during puberty. Think we should demonize this chemical. I have paid many times over for the convenience to saying goodbye to Mr. Roach! And the NC Dept of Ag touted benefits. The ag agent said it was safe enough to eat once dry. 22reToyota, you think it's been demonized, you eat vegetables saturated with it & we'll wait $ see what comes up on you. Or let your kids run through fields treated with it & see what happens to them?
