On the morning of December 16, 2011, my friend and I were visiting Las Vegas and were just heading home. A friend of ours had left her purse in our car, so we went back to her place to drop it off. After we did, we drove up one block, made a complete stop at the stop sign, then made a left turn. 2 seconds later, we saw cop car lights and a cop siren behind us.
After the cop told my friend to put his hands on the steering wheel, he asked us:
"Where are you from?"
"What are you doing in Las Vegas?"
"Why does your car have California plates on it?" ('Cause it's a rental car, u moron!)
"Do you have any weapons in your car?"
"Have you been jail before?"
"Who are you visiting out here and why?" (We were visiting my Aunt and Uncle who live in your damn city)
Basically, all the questions Jay-Z got asked in the "99 Problems" song. After he got our IDs (note: I was a passenger, not a driver, so I don't know why he needed mine), I got out my Flip camera and filmed my thoughts about the occurring incident.
Bottom line: the cop saw two Black guys with beards riding around in a nice-looking, brand new Ford Taurus, and figured we were up to no good. It wasn't until my friend showed his military ID (that's right - never been in trouble AND serves his country) that the cop finally left us alone. Well, screw that, I say "F--k tha police!"
(Note: while my sentiment may seem like a generalization, I'm only giving the finger to those cops who make these types of racial profiling stops on any given day. One would hope cops who actually DO their jobs correctly would not be offended... but if they are, f--k 'em.)
I'm really sorry you experienced that, but I know how you feel. Had a simular thing happen to me in Florida. They took apart the car and left us to reassemble the vehicle. No charges, no ticket just harrasment.
