Martins after '46 had Sitka tops,but there were a batch of guitars back in '53 and in '57 that were made with very stiff Engelmann tops.They call them "mystery" topped Martins.The looks and sound are like Adirondack.Special guitars.

Those "mystery"1953 spruce tops have a more light pumpkin like color instead of those browish Sitka tops.Some say it's Adirondack.To my ears,it sounds like Adirondack.
I have the same guitar in Sitka from 1951.Both are very loud,but the '53 has a fuller tonal spectrum.
