Have you considered where diamonds come from or how they were mined? Or have you ever considered what globalization is and how it relates to diamonds? The answer is probably no. These thoughts are probably not something that is taken into consideration when buying a new gorgeous piece of diamond jewelry, or even when learning the definition of globalization. The documentary, The Truth about Blood Diamonds had the goal to inform those who would not normally take into consideration the brutal process behind how many of the worlds diamonds made their way into the jewelry our society purchases every single day, as well as how globalization only helps make the process run more smoothly. The documentary sheds light on how men, women, and children are forced into vicious conditions as slaves mining for diamonds.
The unfortunate people affected by the blood diamond concept are not only forced to mine diamonds, which will then be sold all over the world, they are unintentionally funding violent civil wars throughout the region. These civil wars are fueled by corrupt officials, and result in thousands of deaths. The millions in revenue from selling these immorally gained diamonds are not only sold to gain a profit, but to buy the weapons used in the civil wars.
Not only are the people of these regions, which include a large area of Africa, subjected to mine diamonds against their will, but often sustain life-altering injuries in the process. People are often committed of wrongly stealing the diamonds, which results in either one or both of their hands being taken off. The process of selling the diamonds is one that is worldwide and involves developed countries all over buying and selling the diamonds as part of an economic stable. While globalization does not directly fuel the brutality to receive these diamonds, it unintentionally makes the process of doing so much easier. However, due to the growing awareness of this topic, change is being made everyday to save a hand as well as being able to put a diamond on one.
