Kiri Te Kanawa = final scene from "Arabella".
∞∞∞
ARABELLA:
was da kommen wird!
ARABELLA:
Und du wirst glauben --?
MANDRYKA:
Und du wirst bleiben, wie du bist?
ARABELLA:
Ich kann nicht anders werden, nimm mich, wie ich bin!

ARABELLA:
I'm very glad, Mandryka, that you have not
gone away. I intended to drink this glass of water all alone, hoping to forget the unpleasantness, and then to go to bed, no longer to think of you and me until the bright daylight was shining once again.
But when I sensed that you were standing in the dark a mighty power touched my very heart, so that I did not need a drink to fresh me:
I am refreshed because I feel so happy.
And I offer this drink that none has touched, to my friend this evening, when my childhood is at an end.
MANDRYKA:
Just as no one else shall ever drink from this glass, you are mine, and I am yours forever.
ARABELLA:
And so we are betrothed and united
in grief and joy, in injury and forgiveness.
MANDRYKA:
For ever, my angel, and for
whatever may happen now!
ARABELLA:
And you will trust me?
MANDRYKA:
And you will stay the way you are?
ARABELLA:
I cannot change -- take me as I am!

  • i do want this dvd or cd. is it available now?

  • @harvinsky : The complete production is not available in dvd. This particular scene/clip was from her portrait, titled "Dame Kiri Te Kanawa". It's the ROH/Covent Garden production. I think the one that is available on DVD is 1996 Metropolitan production.

  • This is a Convent Garden production in btw 1990/91 - from her portrait ;)

  • Ok thanks for the info, I was just reading the DVD cover... :-)

  • I think this is from the 1989 or 1990ROH production, because I own the Met 1995 one and this is different. She sings this better than anyone else, I agree!

  • Hello, when are you going to share with us your videos? :-)

  • Kiri always performs so eloquently...such a refined singer. 5 stars!

  • This is so beautiful, Kiri and the opera. The simple action of bringing someone a glass of water takes a higher very romantic meaning as it becomes Arabella's symbol of her love for Mandryka. One of the most beautiful mments in opera.

  • Gracias por este video !

  • @bronxbearbud I can say no more. You leave me in shame and all I can do now is to apologize. Nichts für ungut.

  • @SatanAteMySocks

Ehrenarierin - "honorary Aryan by marriage". And while Hitler may have loved Lehar's music, he sure hated Lehar's "Das Land des Lächelns" librettist, the Jewish Fritz Löhner-Beda, who, despite Lehar's personal appeal to Hitler, was sent to his death -- along with HIS Jewish wife -- at Auschwitz.

  • @SatanAteMySocks Well, you insulted my "terribly stupid" remark from a place of ignorance, and show no shame or contrition at having had that ignorance exposed and contradicted. While I could whip up a tempest worthy of Aithra in "Die Aegyptische Helen" over the way Goebbels arranged for Lehar's Jewish wife to be "Ehrenarierin", I'll instead borrow her line as the curtain falls on the first act: "Kannst du nicht schweigen?" (grin)

  • @bronxbearbud Now you got me; I was indeed unaware of this certain point in the opera. But nevertheless I really can't comply with your rather polemic comment, which only once more picks up the relation between Wagner and the Third Reich. And besides: As far as I know, Hitler was also a fan of Lehar's The Merry Widow.

  • @SatanAteMySocks

You're unaware of the significance of Arabella's second act declaration to Mandryka, which virtually quotes Ruth's declaration to Naomi in the Old Testament, a message of tolerance and acceptance in which Ruth, a Moabite, embraces Naomi's people and God, conveying the belief in an inclusive God who embraces all peoples, even in the ancient world of the Israelites - a very good message for Hitler to have learned.

  • magnificent!

  • @bronxbearbud What a terribly stupid comment. As if it's Wagner who made Hitler the psychopath he was. And besides: Ever heard Strauss' Elektra?
