When they begin
the beguine
it brings back the sound
of music so tender
it brings back a night
of tropical splendor
it brings back a memory ever green

I'm with you once more
under the stars
and down by the shore
an orchestras playing
and even the palms
seem to be swaying
when they begin
the beguine

to live it again
is past all endeavor
except when that tune
clutches my heart
and there we are swearing to love forever
and promising never
never to part

What moments divine
what rapture serene
to clouds came along
to disperse the joys we had tasted
and now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted
I know but too well what they mean

so dont let them begin the beguine
let the love that was once a fire
remain an ember
let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
when they begin the beguine

oh yes let them begin the beguine
make them play
til the stars that were there before
return above you
till you whisper to me
once more darling I love you
and we suddenly know what heaven we're in
when they begin
the beguine

  • A champagne cocktail of a ballad. And Ms. Stafford's vocal is like honey.

  • Absolutely one of the best versions, excellent performed by Jo

  • A beautiful rendition of this old song second only to deanna durbin

  • THE BEST.

  • fantastic you dont get singers like this anymore

  • God, she has a nice voice! So many emotions in every 2 or 3 notes.

  • This is gourmet music. I too wish I could have heard her at a live concert. I am 66 and was brought up on Jo Stafford and the Mills Brothers. Theirs was a music that inspired one and engendered a degree of serenity.

  • Driving home from work at the Nevada Test Site in the late '80s a local AM station would play Jos' music. I'm still in LOVE with her. Sorry dear Wife.

  • @JR1960actor Thank you so much for answering my questions. At age 58 this music is before my time, but a person always has a chance to catch up when it comes to music. It's so easy to hear that Jo Stafford is one of the all time greats. I will always love her. It's sad that I will never get to see a live concert of Jo Stafford. I feel the same way about Judy Garland,Jane Morgan, and Jane Morgan.

  • This is where it all BEGIN THE BEGUINE!!!!!

  • Pure Jo!! Exquisite!! So smooth....so sweet and lovely! She was the very tops of all female vocalists...bar none...from my viewpoint..... An older gent who remembers those great WWII songs and singers. What a great era for music!

Not to be seen or heard again...sorry to say....bye...bye...

    BRH
