Yikes, in an emergency where I havent had time t strip the armature and recut the commutator I've had to sand the commutator intsu. A few grades of sandpaper would have given a vastly superior finish, not to mention having to wait a few days for the water to evaporate in the windings that you just pushed in with the compressed air.

I think a good fine metal polish would work better and faster than tooth past, all your doing is polishing the copper.
