Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's Message to Canyon

Note: this video was shot 3 days before Palin was chosen to be a VP candidate. SHE didn't even know yet! No one did! I was hired to run the teleprompter for Maria Bartiromo, a longtime news personality for CNBC. Behind Sarah in the video you can see a crane. We were up on Glen Alps in Anchorage for Maria's story "The Hunt for Black Gold". While we were hurrying up and waiting for everything, I was pickin' berries. Because if you know me, you know that is the only thing I do in August. So Sarah didn't know I was on the crew, she just thought I was picking berries. Canyon was in preschool at the time, couldn't be there because I was working. So I had the brilliant thought to have her record him a message. I posted it on YouTube so my friends and family could see. How cute, we all thought. Canyon was so excited. We keep up on the news in my household and he votes with me. He knew right who she was. At age 4, this was HUGE for him to hear personally from the Governor.

Well then out of the blue that Friday, John McCain made his big announcement, and all the sudden this little video was one of only a handful of Sarah Palin videos on YouTube at the time. So I got flooded with 20,000 hits in a few hours. Quickly, cable news filled YouTube with other videos and it petered off. And now it's just a curiosity, though occasionally a new comment is posted on the bathroom wall about it.

Although I voted for her against Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary (I'm a nonpartisan voter so I can vote in either primary), Sarah Palin lost my support when she went national. I worked in her administration and thought she was a reasonably good governor. I thought it was cool how she would give speeches with Piper on her hip (a toddler at the time). A huge improvement over Frank Murkowski. But she's lost her mind lately. I join the majority of Alaskans in disapproving of her now.

And some day I'll hold her to her promise that she'd like to meet Canyon in person. Just waiting until he gets a bit older so he can ask her tougher questions.

The comments people left are pretty entertaining. I deleted the most horrible of them. Many had foul language. Some were sexist. Some were downright pornographic, which is bizarre considering how she is obviously addressing a child. But some showed signs of intelligent debate in the presidential election, and I thought that was cool. So I let most comments stay, even if they were slightly off-color. I suppose I have to recognize that YouTube is the bathroom wall.

Remember that at the time I posted this video, we all just thought she was going to be our governor and had no idea that things were about to drastically change. So, in the interest of being true to the words I used when I first posted this video in August 2008 (when things were different!), here is the original description, unedited:

"I ran into Governor Sarah Palin this evening. I asked her to record a message for Canyon (because he's such a big fan) and she graciously did. Hats off to the first Mother Governor of Alaska! Sarah Palin's words really moved Canyon's heart tonight. They meant a lot to him, and I should have filmed the look on his face when he watched the movie for the first time."

Canyon is my son. He is a big Sarah Palin fan, so that is why she recorded a message to him. We just got back from her big Welcome Home rally in Anchorage this morning. Good times!

Was Sarah Palin REALLY raised in Alaska? I find that a little hard to believe given her accent. She sounds more Upper Midwestern if anything.  Do Alaskans REALLY sound like this? I know Mike Gravel sure as hell doesn't.

Ya know it's really sad that people call Sarah Palin stupid! I mean who are they comparing her to? Obama???.lol what a joke the man wont release his G.P.A scores and can't talk with out a prompter,. he has to be the most ignorant man to hold that office! Bush didn't do too much damage

just a bloody costly war, inappropriate responses to national disasters, gas/food/housing prices no one could afford... oh & for his final trick he's putting us into another great depression.

too bad Bush stopped the photos of dead soldiers coming home from Iraq.. then you could have seen over 5,000 deaths right on your television

screen. Bush is the biggest mass murderer this country has ever had.
