In this remarkable collection of prose, poetry, illustrations and documents, Ty Gray-EL petitions African-American men and women to love themselves. He challenges readers to open their minds to the possibilities of love by starting with themselves. If you start with yourself, he maintains, the rest will take care of itself. If we start loving ourselves unconditionally, we will save the world one individual at a time.

  • I thought this was beautiful. Not only his voice, but the entire thing. Very well done. Although I'll have to say, there are lots and lots of things that come out of Africa, and they come this way (towards America). Not all of it to brag about though. Some positive, some negative.

so just remember ppl this is poetry. Very good poetry.

  • I love this, but actually, there ARE hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean too.

  • Uh no...there is no connection between morality and meteorology as the poem states.

  • kuonankrma: Its sad that some people only want to find fault. I never suggested excluding any Commandment.

You are the one who said 'we should only'. I never introduced that phrase into this dialog.

Did you even hear what I suggested?

My suggestion is that if we honor our fathers and mothers as the Commandment instructed, then perhaps we could get the other nine accomplished as well.

Narrow-mindedness is what landed us in this position in the first place. Let's learn to love instead of hate.

  • TY GRAY EL! As an aspiring spoken word artist and fellow black I commend and applaude you my black brother. This shook me to my core...all I could say was "my God". I love the way how you mingled science and fact. As it says in the Word of God (Romans 12:19) "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord". May God have mercy on the american south. I truly do believe this is the breath of our ancestors.
