I had a pet preying mantis once. Named him Buddy. We'd feed him live crickets. :)
He didn't die, he matured, grew wings, and I let him go. Although since most males die during mating (get eaten by the females), he's probably dead now.

@mlan1957 I've been bitten by one before because I held it improperly so it bit me in defense. It stung and the bite was irritated as a normal bug bite. So I do believe they have some venom. Still, it's completely avoidable.

@mlan1957 No, they're not harmful at all. Although, I've heard of mantises that reach 30 cm in length. I'm pretty sure they will be harmless as well, but if it does decide to bite you, then they'll probably manage to get a chunk of flesh from your finger. Still, even the biggest mantis I've encountered would rather put on a threatening display or fly away than bite you.

@LunaShadowWolf13 Yes, they'll often grab the meat from you if you just hold it close to them. In this case I held the meat in my fingers and put the mantis on my hand.
