Before you ask - no I'm not shooting panoramic images with a film-based Canon AE1-Program. I'm just using it to illustrate the technique.
@jeffsstuff You are missing the point. The primary goal here is not to ensure the camera doesn't shake during the exposure but to ensure that the camera is positioned over the exact same spot on the ground between shots. You have to have a free-hanging weight to do this. What you are suggesting could also be useful but not for this purpose.

I like the idea of the rubber band but would offer a possible improvement to the weight. Perhaps a loop at the end. You could then put your foot in the loop, ensuring it doesn't move (more sturdy than the weight).
